This course is organized and scheduled around a team project on machine design with lecture topics on mechanical design to support the needs of this project. The course provides the opportunity to experience the development of a real new engineering product prototype. In collaboration with MIT, advisory support is provided by Prof. David Wallace while preparing this course.
Lab / Workshop

Technical Support | Xiao Xiaochuan | Guo Weijie |
Student Coordination | Zhang Zhen | Jiang Wei |
Communication Support | Yu Dongwei | Zhang Baolin |
Each team has 3 student mentors with a specific background in related machine design or integration, assisted by 2 teaching assistants on team management, 3 lab & workshop instructors, and 1 admin assistant on budget oversight. Definitions of the roles of different team members are available.
What to do during lab and workshop sessions?
- Before attending the lab and workshop sessions, you will upload scanned pages of your design notebook online for peer review later.
- When attending the lab & workshop sessions, you will hand-in hard copies of your design notebook for on-site review and signature by the instructors.
- During the lab sessions, your goal is to discuss with your team regarding the next steps towards the design, with on-site consultancy from the lab instructor
- During the workshop session, the workshop instructors will provide learning materials to help you better understand the design task and communication.
- After the lab & workshop session, you will participate in the peer review online.
Design Support
Each team is appointed with three student mentors as design support, with each student mentor covering one specific task force. Members of each team and task force are encouraged to make contact with your appointed student mentor for design support regarding the machine you are tasked with. Please read their role description before making contact, but in simple words, you should view these student mentors as consultants, who will provide suggestions based on detailed evidence or questions you presented, who will not grade you in any way. You are encouraged to contact them through Email, but direct contact through Feishu is also well-supported.
Other Roles
A team of Technology Consultants, Media Coordinators, and Domain Specialists are also monumental in supporting the teaching and learning experience of this course.
