All students are required to participate in the safety briefing and pass the test, which will be administrated by the lab instructors.

Although the safety test won’t directly contribute to your final grading, but failing to pass the safety test will not allow you to participate any lab projects at all 🙁

So join us in the briefing, read the following safety instructions, and pass the test.

Working safely is paramount. Along with lab instructors and shop staff, your team safety officers will be watching for dangerous situations. Always remember that product parts can easily be replaced while body parts can’t! Also, be sure to follow the mainDL safety rules and policies.

Each tool and floor machine in the lab has its own set of safety rules. A list of some important general guidelines is provided below.

•	Safety glasses must be worn at all times in the mainDL lab. We will provide teams with glasses during the week of September 28. Any students or staff not wearing safety glasses will be asked to leave the lab.
•	Don’t rush when using machinery. Think ahead, and plan an escape path before starting to cut.
•	When using a machine, give it your absolute undivided attention. If you are too tired do it later, or find someone else to do it for you.
•	When in doubt, nervous, or unfamiliar, wait until you can have a lab or shop instructor help you.
•	Keep your work area clean and uncluttered.
•	Don’t stand in a path where parts may be projected. Remember that bystanders may be at risk too.
•	When machining, don’t let your hands be enveloped by the work piece. If something grabs you should be able to let go. Use proper clamps and fixtures where appropriate.
•	Do not work in an off-balance position.
•	Remove all rings, watches, jewelry, and loose clothing before working with machinery. Either pinup long hair or tie it back and tuck it into your shirt.
•	Do not wear open toe shoes or sandals in the lab. Any students or staff wearing open toe shoes will be asked to leave the lab.
•	Do not run or yell in the shop.
