Overview
Welcome all, joining us in this Autumn Semester’s ME303 Introduction to Mechanical Design.
Starting from this semester, we will be having this class in a new format based on a recent effort in education collaboration between SUSTech and MIT in emerging engineering, with more information explained here. This website has been set up to help all students getting familiar with the organization of this course, with detailed schedules listed here, and you are encouraged to subscribe to the course calendar to get reminders of the key events of the course. Details of the grading are provided here, with a team of teaching support to help all students throughout this semester. And we sincerely appreciate the generous support from our sponsors in making this course happen.
As you may realize from the course schedule, we will have a weekly lecture covering the theoretical fundamentals in mechanical design, followed by a weekly lab session or workshop session helping you, and your team, to work together towards the projects of this term. Deliverables are the detailed assignments for you and your team to complete, which directly relates to your grading.
One of the major changes we’ve introduced is the format of “large student teams with well-rounded teaching support towards a theme project of engineering design.”
- We’ve prepared a detailed definition of the various roles to help you navigate the collaborative team effort in design towards the “wasteless” theme.
- Don’t worry if the information seems to be a lot, as we’ve gathered a team of 25+ teaching staff helping you guys to navigate through this course.
For Week 01, we have two lectures and no lab/workshop sessions, as explained below. Preparation for this week is reading only.
- Limited copies of the textbook can be borrowed from Admin Asst. Zhao Dan on Monday’s lecture. There are also a few copies at the University Library. And you are welcome to search online for electronic copies or request it from previous students.
- Read chapters 1 and 2 of the textbook after the Monday lecture.
